Volunteers and Pace Bikes

We Need Volunteers: Party Pumper Uppers

This Saturday, we’re off to run a race! Not really. Instead, we’ve been asked to lead off the South Memphis 5k, on our bikes. Will you join us?! Our friends at St. Andrew AME’s are hosting this race to benefit their initiatives in South Memphis. These initiatives include the South Memphis Farmers Market, the Community Library and Circles of Success Learning Academy Charter School.

We will meet at the Revolutions Bike Gate, on Saturday, Nov 7 at 8:00. After riding over to the race, we’ll enjoy a bit of Zumba and then lead off the race. Hopefully we’ll get to check out the South Memphis Farmers’ Market before or after the race.

Would you like to ride with us and make some noise? Email Sylvia to be put on the list!

We Need Volunteers: Overhaul Nights!

IMG_1477

Have you been looking for a way to learn to work on bikes? We don’t have any classes running, right now, but we do have Overhaul Nights. These nights are a great way to get your hands on lots and lots of bikes. Don’t worry if you haven’t worked on bikes, before. We can get you started. And since we’re working on old bikes, we run into tricky stuff, all the time. So, we’re all learning together!

Biking to meals and TriCycles on the move

Bike to BrunchIMG_2548

Last week, we Biked to Dinner with 18 folks. Las Delicias was tasty and Spottswood was a nice ride from Cooper-Young. I was reminded that, during the summer, we talked about going to Bryant’s for brunch. This sunny cooler weather seems like the perfect time to make that trek. So, mark your calendars and plan to join us, this Saturday, Oct 17 to head to Summer Ave. We’ll meet at Revolutions’ Bike Gate at 8:30 a.m. (unless it’s raining). Check out the Facebook event for any updates or cancellations.

A Very Big Thank You for help with the Easy Rider TriCycles!!

A huge “thank you” goes out to Madeleine Edwards, Revolutions member and owner of Get Green Recycle Works. She hauled the City of Memphis Division of Parks and Neighborhoods’ TriCycles to Overton Park, this week. The City bought ten TriCycles and Revolutions will be hosting group rides for Senior Citizens from around the city. So far, I’ve talked to several Senior Community Centers and Residential Centers. They all expressed interest and three have scheduled rides.

IMG_2528

Do you have friends or relatives at any of these centers?

If so, encourage them to ask their activities directors to contact me, so we can get them riding!

  • The Glenmary, Nov 6 at 10:00 a.m.

If you would like to help lead these rides, email me!

This organization works to identify, conserve and interpret the region’s natural, cultural and scenic resources to improve the quality of life and prosperity in West Tennessee along the six counties that front the River to include Shelby, Tipton, Lauderdale, Dyer, Lake and Obion counties.

Join us at 2:00 p.m. and bring your bike, for a short ride, afterwards!

Fellas, PLEASE NOTE:

Open Shop will be open, during Women’s Bike Chat. So, don’t stay away!

Overhaul Nights

The Overhaul nights are going great, and we need your help. We’ve been working on wheels and will probably move on to change and bottom brackets this week. Don’t worry if those words sound Greek, to you. Join us Thursday night and we’ll get you started working on bikes. And if you already know a bit about what you’re doing, you’re welcome Mondays and Thursdays!

Endings and Beginnings

A Bittersweet Announcement

I have an announcement that I feel bittersweet about. David Evans, who has been a creative member of our staff and an amazing mechanic and teacher, told me that he wants to pursue a new path.  We’re so sorry to see David leave our staff and we wish him the best of luck with his new endeavors. We’ve appreciated his work in setting up our new Shop, his acumen for teaching us about bicycle maintenance and his incredible enthusiasm for all things bike! We didn’t want to miss the chance to celebrate David, so Women’s Bike Chat will have a cake and some time to say what we’ve loved about David, at 2:00 p.m., TODAY. Feel free to stop in.

RevolutionsRecRoom51

A Time to Think

With David’s leaving, we’re going to take some time to reassess our Fall schedule. I came home from the Netherlands with a very strong desire for us to have a Training Fleet of bicycles. These would be overhauled bicycles that we could use to host rides for people without bikes, or even teach a group to ride on. We have lots of bikes waiting for this type of overhaul.

We also have several ways that we are attempting to connect with our community. The Bike to Dinner and Orange Mound rides were very popular, this Summer. I’d like to see us do more of those while the weather is nice. And the Easy Rider Adult TriCycles program that we are running for the City of Memphis Parks and Neighborhoods is about to start. So, I want to spend some time figuring out the best way for us to tackle these projects.

To that end, our Shop hours may be wonky for another couple of weeks. I hope you’ll bear with me and Revolutions, as we figure out our Fall schedule. I’m excited about the ways we’re going to be out in the community. And I’m excited about the possibilities for how we can use the Shop and our tools.

Basic Bike Assessment–Postponed

Because of this time of thinking, we’re postponing this month’s Basic Bike Assessment class until the Monday, October 5th. Not only does this class give a great overview of what maintenance you should be doing on your bicycle, it also gives a nice overview of how you can plug in, to Revolutions. There’s still plenty of room, in the class. So, read more and sign up, here.

Tour De Coop

TdCoop-2015-Poster-2-320x213

It’s your last week to sign up. Revolutions, in cooperation with GrowMemphis, is co-hosting the 3rd Annual Tour De Coop, on Saturday, Sept. 26! I think about 60 folks rode the first year. Last year, there were over 300. What do you think? Can we make it 500 this year?

This guided, and self-guided, tour of backyard chicken coops, honeybees and community gardens is a fun way to see our city. Come check out how Memphians are changing our food system. And also try out how ridable our city is, in a fun and friendly group-ride setting.

Read more and get tickets, here. And we’ll see you on Saturday!

Out in the Community:

Connecting People and Transit Using Technology
An informal evening with TransLoc, MATA, and the Mayor’s Institute for Excellence in Government Innovation Team

TransLoc will introduce its Memphis real-time bus arrival app, then lead a lively panel discussion about the links between people, transit, and technology.  How can the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) get and use feedback about where people want to go?  What if transit drivers could pick up riders on demand using an app?  Should private services pick up people, in partnership with transit, in hard-to-serve areas?  How can technology help public transit serve all of us – better, faster and possibly cheaper?

Join TransLoc, MATA, and the Mayor’s Institute for Excellence in Government to share your ideas:

Back from the Netherlands

I’m back from the Netherlands, but just barely (my luggage got lost, but thank goodness the shoes I bought were in my carry on!). I have more to say about my trip, but I’ll do that later this week. For now, I just want to alert you to this week’s wonky schedule, at Revolutions. David went to Las Vegas, for Interbike, and the coming weekend brings the Cooper-Young Fest and all it’s activities. Revolutions was asked to lead off the Cooper-Young 4 miler, on Friday night, and we’ll have a booth in front of First Congo, on Saturday.

Even though the Shop will be closed, tomorrow night, you can still join us for the Neighborhood SLOW Ride. We’re meeting a bit earlier, so we are able to finish before dark. We’ll meet on Monday the 14th at the Revolutions Bike Gate at 6:15 p.m. You can read more here.

Women’s Bike Chat

is on for next Sunday, September 20, at 2:00 p.m. And as always, we’ll take a ride together, afterwards, if the weather is nice. I’ll have more pictures from the Netherlands, and then we can ride around, together, and pretend we live there!

A Quick Break

Shop Closed, this week

September is going to be very busy. So, we are taking a quick break before it all gets started. The Shop will be closed from Sunday, Sept 6 through Monday, Sept. 14. However, we will ride for the Neighborhood SLOW ride, on Monday evening, the 14th.

Last week’s Orange Mound ride

We had another great ride through Orange Mound, last week.

IMG_1955

This ride works in several ways. We, as the riders, get a chance to know each other. And we also get to greet, wave and yell hello to Orange Mound neighbors, as we roll past. We frequently hear from those sitting on porches that they want to ride, too. Bicycling as a group is fun. And it’s a great way to show off that they are lots of different folks who ride.

Netherlands preparation

On Monday, I got to ride through Overton Park, Broad Ave and Cooper-Young with our Dutch Cycling Embassy advisor Tonny Bosch. He was here, in Memphis, to see our city. And he will meet with our group, while we are in the Netherlands. It was inspiring to talk with him. He told me about cycling projects he worked on in Kampala, Uganda; Austin, TX and San Francisco, CA.

I’ve been watching all these great videos about the amazing cycling infrastructure in the Netherlands. Tonny explained that they’ve been working on that great cycling infrastructure, for forty years. I guess this was inspiring, in that it says we shouldn’t get discouraged if our efforts take a while. On the other hand, I want more and better bicycling in Memphis, NOW.

I look forward to the ways we’ll ride bikes, this week. And I’m sure I’ll be bursting with ideas, when we get back!

Our Busy Schedule

Monday Night — Two Choices

On Monday, you can either do Demolition Night or the Neighborhood SLOW Ride and Kidical Mass. Both are fun.

Demolition Night helps us work through our donated bikes to find parts worth saving, and scrap headed for the scrap heap. Work on this night will also help us keep our stock of used parts sorted and available. This is a great night for new members to participate in because we’re just breaking down bikes, so you don’t have to worry about breaking something!

Neighborhood SLOW Ride and Kidical Mass is a slow and easy ride through our neighborhood. Ramble around with us as the sun goes down for some fresh air at the end of a hot day. This is a great ride for families. If your kid is riding on two wheels, without training wheels, they are welcome to ride their own bikes! Or maybe you just haven’t been on a bike in awhile. Rent one of ours, and get back to bicycling!

We’ll meet in front of the Revolutions Bike Gate, on Monday at 6:45. And if you’d like to try one of our Easy Rider Tri-Cycles, we have 10 of them! City bikes and trikes will be available to rent, for $5, plus tax.

Overhaul Night is Back

IMG_1814

Our second Overhaul class just ended and we want the students to get some more practice. So, Overhaul Night is back. This experienced night is for folks who have taken the Overhaul Class.

Under supervision, you will work on different types of brakes, bottom brackets, etc as you help us get bikes ready for folks to ride.

You didn’t take the Overhaul Class but you know what you’re doing around a bike? You are also invited!

Work on this night will help us overhaul some of our donations. We need more bike available for folks who want to ride!

Want to take the Overhaul Class?

The Fall class starts on Thursday, October 8. Read more and sign up here!

Bike Polo Tournament — Should you go?

Our friends from the Memphis Hardcourt Bike Polo are hosting a tournament on Aug 29 and 30. It will be a big gathering of bicycle people from all over the Southeast. They’re having a kick-off party, with a group ride, on Friday night (7:30 p.m. at the Cooper-Young Gazebo) and all are invited.

Their tournament will be held at the Glenview Park (1141 S. Barksdale). Does Glenview sound familiar? That’s because that is the same place we went last week, for the City of Memphis Bike and Walk Fest. It is a beautiful park, with paved paths for biking and walking, and lots of beautiful trees. It’s a great place to hang out. If you missed the Bike Rodeo, why not check out this neighborhood gem while also checking out some Bike Polo? I  made this map, for riding from Revolutions, if you’re not sure where Glenview is. I give two route choices, in case the train is blocking Cooper.

The Shop will be CLOSED during this tournament. But come out to Glenview Park and get your bike worked on there! And Hot Mess Burritos will arrive at 1:00, on Saturday, to serve lunch!

Tour De Coop, Register NOW!!!

Register this week, if you want to be sure to get this year’s awesome tee-shirt! $12 gets you the shirt and an super ride!

Rider leaders/chasers needed: I’m looking for folks to lead the long rides and the family short rides. If you’re interested, email me at infoATrevolutionsmemphisDOTcom. Volunteering comes with a free T-shirt!
