Wrench & Ride Bicycle Summer Camp: Week 1!

This week we had 11 Campers, ages 9 to 12. We played games, did lots of riding and got to work on our bicycles. In our workshop, we explored the ball bearings systems that allow the pedals, crank arms and handlebars to move. And we looked over the kids’ bikes to see if everything is in good working order. We approached our street riding like Driver’s Ed for Bicycles. We talked about intersections, at length. We practiced how to make right and left turns, avoid hazards, and what to do when the bike lane ends. We finished up the week with a ride to Overton Park, where we checked out all the bike racks, and played some games. “Toilet Tag” was a favorite!

Next week we have Rising 8th through 10th graders. And, we have a couple of spots left. So, if you know someone who wants to Wrench and Ride, sign them up here!

Cooper-Young Neighborhood Bike Ride

Join the Cooper Young Community Association for a neighborhood group bike ride, on 18814657_833127454305_2549044475865419385_oSaturday, June 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. We will leisurely tour the neighborhood and view several concerns and potential initiatives identified by the CYCA Transportation Committee. We will then proceed as a group to a nearby location for lunch. This is an all-ages and all-ability ride (but no training wheels, please). Revolutions is offering $5 bike rentals for anyone who needs a bike on the day of the ride.

Meet the new CYCA Transportation Committee, learn about Revolutions, and talk about changes that can be made in the Cooper-Young neighborhood to improve bike and pedestrian access and safety.

Father’s Day Ride with Dad!

Next Sunday is Father’s Day. So, join us Sunday, June 18 at 2:00 p.m. Bring your dad, bring a friend’s Dad. And Dads, bring the kids. We’ll have photographer Brandon Dill riding with us (who’s also a dad who rides with his kids!) to capture photos of Dads and kids on bicycles.

After we get some pics, we’ll ride to Memphis Made. Since it’s so close, we’ll take the long way there (you know, like Dad and his short cuts?!).

We’re looking for all sorts of bike-y dads to ride with us:

  • Dad’s with Cargo bikes
    • Come show them off!
  • Dad’s who want to Ride a Revolutions Cargo bike
    • Rent one for the ride for just $10 bucks!
    • We have 7 to choose from!
  • Dad’s with kids on your bike
    • Bike seats, bike trailers, trail-a-bikes!
  • Dad’s whose kids ride their own bikes
    • No training wheels, balance bikes or tricycles, please

June’s Members’ Class

This month, we’re back to our Basic Bike Assessment class. This is a great one if you are new to the workshop. You will learn the parts of your bicycle, and talk about what parts should (or shouldn’t!) be moving. Read more and sign up, here.

Great Streets Pilot Project

Click here to read all about the new Great Streets Pilot Project, a mostly protected east-west bike route through Downtown that connects the riverfront with Midtown and points farther east, as well as a new pedestrian “promenade” along Peabody Place with areas for interactive public art elements, eating and drinking, lounging, and other activities. You can also view street plans, with Before and Proposed After pictures.
