The newsletter is late going on this week because I was out last night at Spillit. It was at the Clayborn Temple and absolutely amazing. And, a big congratulations to my husband, Teddy, because he is now the Grand Master Storyteller of 2016!
Engineering and Bicycles
Revolutions spent some time, this week, with the National Society of Black Engineers. We were asked to attend the November meeting of Memphis’ Junior Chapter. They meet every month to hear a variety of speakers and engage in activities to help students discover firsthand how engineering and technology relate to the world around them. A big thank you goes out to Ryan Carroll for putting together a great workshop looking at the bicycle’s history of engineering decisions. Why is the diamond frame the strongest? Why do we still use rubber tires and tubes? How do spokes keep the wheel round?
Thanksgiving and Shopping
Revolutions will be closed for Thanksgiving Day. But we will be open on Saturday and Sunday. We’re a great place to start your Christmas shopping! We have lots refurbished bicycles available. Or you might like to give someone a spot in our upcoming Overhaul Class.
Fix a Flat class, TOMORROW!
Join us Monday, Nov 21 at 6:30 for our Fix a Flat class. We cover everything you need to know about tires and tubes. Learn why you get flats and the best ways to prevent them, in the future. Never get stranded again!
We’ll show you how to fix a flat. And then you’ll have time to practice. Bring your own bike, if you want to. Or use one of ours. This class is for Revolutions members, only. Not a member of Revolutions, yet? You can join when you sign up. Read more and sign up here!
Ride to Starry Nights at Shelby Farms, Mon. Nov 28, 6:30 p.m.!
After eating all the Thanksgiving food, you’ll probably want a long ride! Plan on joining us Monday, Nov. 28, to ride to Shelby Farms’ Starry Nights. We will meet outside of Cheffie’s at High Point Terrace at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, which can be purchased when we arrive at Shelby Farms, are $5/person.
This ride is about a 15 mile loop from High Point Terrace. We think we’ll be actively riding for about 2 1/2 hours. We take a slow pace where we can chat with each other and take in the lights.
1. We are NOT meeting at Revolutions. We’ll meet at Cheffie’s at High Point Terrace. Either ride or drive there and meet us outside of the restaurant. Maybe grab something to eat BEFORE 6:30.
2. We are NOT renting bicycles for this ride. If you want to get a city or cargo bike from us, you’ll need to get by the Shop on Sunday afternoon. The day rates are $25 to $45.
3. You WILL need lights. The Shelby Farms Greenline is VERY dark, at night. You must bring bicycle lights!
For all of our rides:
All rides meet at Revolutions, on the Cooper-side of First Congo, in front of our gate with bike art above it. If you are renting bicycles, please come 15 minutes early.
All rides are weather dependent (we will postpone, if it looks like rain). And we require helmets on all Revolutions sponsored rides. Bring your bike in to Revolutions ahead of time for a tune-up, to make sure it’s ready to ride! Please bring a locks, if you can. We take a pretty easy pace, one where we can chat with each other! Please remember that you ride at your own risk.
Don’t let not having a bike keep you from riding with us. We have bikes for sale, in our Shop. And we also rent adult bikes for $5, and family cargo bikes for $10 plus tax, on the night of a group ride.
Did you join our contest?
You still have time. Just make sure your Instagram account is public until the end of the contest. We’ll draw winners the day after Thanksgiving.
