I thought it was Fall…

Kids Bike Club

This Fall, we are testing out an idea for teaching kids to ride. We asked a group of Kindergarten through 2nd graders if they would join us for a weekly club meeting. Recognizing that a lot of these children have younger brothers and sisters, we invited them too. And we asked the parents to stick around to both encourage the kids and find out more about how they could ride as a family.

Well, this week was our first club meeting (we waited until the end of September thinking the weather would be cooler!). And the kids were awesome. We were joined by nine K-2nd graders, plus three older siblings (who I enlisted as volunteers) and four younger siblings (who we encouraged to ride our balance bikes).

Four of the K-2nd graders already knew how to ride their bicycles (one having learned just days before). I sent them off with the big kids to practice riding. By the end of the session, two more joined them as pedal bike pros and one more was almost there. We’ll keep meeting through the Fall, in the hopes that they will all learn to ride. Then, I hope we’ll be able to get out in the street and talk about road safety, too.

Demolition Night

Have you been wanting to come to the Shop, but feel nervous that you don’t know enough to work on bikes, with us? If so, you should check out Demolition Night! On this night, we break down bicycles that can’t be recycled back to the street. And it is a great time to get your hands on some tools, without the fear of breaking something. Tomorrow night (Monday!) is Demolition Night. Join us in the Shop between 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. to see how fun wrenching on bikes can be!

Show ‘n Tell: Electric Bikes

Have you heard of electric assist bicycles? Are you curious about what they’re like? We’re having a Show ‘n Tell next Sunday at 3:00 at the Shop. We have a few friends who have been tinkering with eAssist and they will show off their work. We’ll gather in front of our Bike Gate, so that after we chat, we can do some test rides!  Join us to learn more!

Rides You Don’t Want to Miss

Beers and Gears

This Thursday night kicks off our new ride: Beers and Gears. This casual ride will gather on on Thursday, Sept 29 at 7:00, in front of Revolutions’ Bike Gate, and roll out for a couple of beers at High Cotton Brewery, in the Edge. Join us on Thursday, Sept 29 at 7:00, in front of Revolutions’ Bike Gate. And read more details here.

Bike to Brunch

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 8 at 9:00 a.m. That’s when we’ll meet up for our first Bike to Brunch of the Fall. We’re headed to Bryant’s, and you know that’s delicious!

Renting Bicycles for Revolutions Group Rides

Don’t let not having a bike keep you from riding on our group rides. We’re renting City Bikes for $5, plus tax and Family Cargo Bikes for $10, plus tax. If you’re renting, please arrive at 15 minutes early, so we can get your bike adjusted for you!

All rides are weather dependent (we will postpone, if it looks like rain). And we require helmets on all Revolutions sponsored rides. And please remember that you ride at your own risk.

Where We Rode, Last Week

Bike to Dinner

We finished up our Summer series with a ride to Casablanca restaurant. It was a cool and lovely evening out on the porch.

MEMFix: Film Row

There were a ton of events happening around Memphis, yesterday. A group of 12 of us rode downtown to Livable Memphis’ latest MEMFix event. It was hot like the middle of summer! Two guests from First Congo’s hostel joined us. They were in town to look at the Southern College of Optometry and we totally won them over, for Memphis!

We parked at the new City-owned Bike Valet racks. Bike/Walk Memphis was watching the bikes. But apparently, anyone can request use of these racks, and they are highly portable. So, if you want to encourage arriving by bicycle, at any of your events, consider hosting some Bike Valet!
