Fall/Winter 2009 Update

Councilman Shea Flinn will be hosting Kyle Wagenschutz (Revolutions Community Bicycle Shop), John Paul Shaffer (Revolutions Community Bicycle Shop), and John Cameron (Deputy City Engineer) as his Neighbortalk guests on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 7:00pm to discuss cycling benefits, wants and need of Memphis cyclists and the city’s bike plan.  Neighbortalk is a live call-in show on the Memphis Public Library’s Channel 18 (WYPL).

If you are available to watch, feel free to call the number on the screen to ask Councilman Flinn and Mr. Cameron for their support of making Memphis a premier place for cycling in the country.  If you are not able to catch to show as it airs, we will make it available for viewing after November 19, 2009.

Safety Class
Revolutions will be hosting a Bicycle Safety Class this Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 10:00am-12:00pm.  Come spend a couple hours fellow bike enthusiasts as we discuss general safety guidelines, specific regulations regarding riding bicycles in Memphis, and overall strategies for getting from point a to point B as safe as possible.  This class is always one of the most interesting classes we teach.  Feel free to bring your questions ready.

Bicycle Safety in the Streets
Date: Saturday, November 21 (10:00am-12:00pm)
Info: Should I ride with traffic or against it? Should I ride on the sidewalk? Can I take a left hand turn in traffic on my bike? Is it even legal to ride in the road? How can I safely navigate Memphis’ city streets? Answers to all these questions and basic street safety procedures will be covered in this workshop. The class will be free and open to the public.  No reservation is necessary.  Hope to see you there!

Children’s Bikes
We will be working with three different groups during December for children’s bicycle giveaways.  This is a wonderful experience where we are able to teach kids about basic bicycle repair and help them refurbish their own bikes just in time for the holidays.  We are expecting to rebuild nearly 75 bicycles this December, and need your help in two ways:

  1. We need bikes!  While Revolutions always has a steady stream of bicycles in place, every new donation helps make the process easier.  We are most in need of 26” Mountain Bikes.  Feel free to bring any donation to the shop during our normal shop hours found on our website.
  2. We need volunteers!  We will be at the shop nearly every day of the week this December and can use any mechanic (experienced, novice, or amateur) to assist with repairs.  If you don’t feel comfortable working on the bikes, we still need people to keep kids running amuck in the shop!  If you are good at “kid-wrangling”, we want you!  Just shoot me an email if you would like to help us out in December.

Holiday Schedule
Revolutions will be closed the following days during the upcoming Holiday season:
Thanksgiving: November 26, 2009 – November 29, 2009
Christmas & New Year’s: December 22, 2009 – January 3, 2009

Starry Nights
Please take a moment and send this info along to your friends, family and contacts who are interested in walking, running and biking Starry Nights!  Shelby Farms will be closing the show to cars for one night only, so this will be pretty special.  It’s a 2-mile loop and we’ll end it with a holiday party at the Visitor Center with free cocoa and snacks.
