Volunteers Needed! – This Saturday (3/3)

Revolutions will be assisting the City of Memphis in the Bicycle Safety Gala being held at the Ed Rice Community Center in Frayser this Saturday, March 3, from 10am-2pm. A flyer for the event is attached.

We are in need of some good volunteers to help man a couple of our bike safety stations. No experience is necessary – you just have to be willing to help run some kids through the bike safety ringer!

If you are avaialble and can help, please send me an email at revolutionsbikeshop@gmail.com so I can send out the details for the event.

Volunteers Needed! All month long!

It is time for the annual Holiday Bicycle Recycle program in conjunction with Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, YMCA, Peddler Bike Shop, Cirque de Velos, and all the other great sponsors and supporters.

This year, we are planning to refurbish bikes for 30 kids from the YMCA. Like last year, we will be coupling the building activities at Revolutions with hands-on teaching exercises in order to train the kids on proper bicycle safety and riding skills.

Below you will find the tentative dates we plan to be working on the program over the next couple of weeks. You will notice that most of the dates and times coincide with normal shop hours at Revolutions, but take note that there are some other dates mixed in to give us an opportunity to get this massive amount of work done. As always, if we finish construction early, we will cancel any remaining build dates.

Specifically, please email us at revolutionsbikeshop@gmail.com if you can help with any of the dates marked “Teach” or “Giveaway”. These are the dates where the kids will be present and we need volunteers on hand to help wrangle the little rascals.

Hope to see you soon!

International Walk To School Day – Volunteers Needed!

Revolutions is looking for volunteers to help with a pedestrian safety event on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 11:30am-2:00pm. If you are available to help out, please email Kyle at revolutionsbikeshop@gmail.com and provide your contact information including phone number.

Next Wednesday, October 5 is International Walk to School Day. On this day children, teachers, parents, and school administrations from all over the world will recognize the growing importance of incorporating physical activity into the daily lives of children. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is to encourage more children to walk or bicycle to school each day rather than riding a bus of being dropped off. In 1964 50% of kids in the US rode to school and the obesity rate was 12% – In 2004, 3% rode to school and the obesity rate was 45%.

The City of Memphis, in partnership with the University of Memphis and Revolutions, is using a Federal program called Safe Routes to Schools to encourage more walking and bicycling to school. The program provides funds to improve infrastructure near the school, provide safety education for children and parents, and work closely with law enforcement officials to provide safe environments for children to walk and bicycle.

Frayser Elementary School was the first recipient of this program and will be celebrating Walk to School Day next week. Revolutions will help to host a pedestrian safety workshop for 5th and 6th grade students next Tuesday, October 4, 2011. We are need of volunteers that are available from 11:30am-2:00pm to help facilitate activities designed to teach pedestrian safety. No experience is needed – we’ll be setting up a number of “field day” stations where children will role play different scenarios they might encounter on the street and ask them to demonstrate safe behaviors.
